FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Staples Retail and Delivery today announced the grand opening of its state-of-the-art 560,000 square-foot retail distribution center at the Vigo County Industrial Park in Terre Haute, Ind.

"Terre Haute is a critical link to support our new store growth in the Midwest," said Thomas G. Stemberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Staples. "The new distribution center helps us maintain our industry leadership by increasing productivity and driving down the cost and time associated with delivering products to our stores," he said.

Staples will employ more than 300 people by year-end, with plans to add more than 500 employees over the next three years. The distribution center is built on 60 acres with expansion capabilities.

"Staples is making a positive impact on our economy, and the new jobs at this facility help support families throughout the Vigo County area," said Indiana Lt. Governor Joe Kernan. "We're pleased to support this investment, and we look forward to a strong future partnership with the company."

The Vigo County distribution center is the fourth in a nationwide network of regional distribution centers currently supporting more than 880 Staples retail stores in the U.S. The site will serve 250 retail stores in 19 Midwestern states, and support the planned growth of more Staples stores in the Midwest. Staples has 27 superstores in Indiana and plans to add at least three more by year-end.

This distribution center is equipped with leading-edge technology, including an advanced computer system for building management. There are more than four miles of conveyors and three miles of "pick" modules in the building. Radio frequency technology is being used to receive, store and retrieve back-up product.

Staples currently operates an 830,000 square-foot facility in Hagerstown, Md; a 310,000 square-foot facility in Killingly, Conn.; and a 500,000 square-foot distribution center in Rialto, Calif.
