"We're delighted that Staples has decided to locate its eastern seaboard distribution center in Killingly. The new DC in Killingly and jobs preserved at Staples' facilities in Putnam and Plainfield provide benefits to the entire region, and demonstrate how government and the private sector can work together in securing jobs"

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Staples, Inc., operator of 722 office superstores throughout North America, will host a grand opening celebration of its newest 307,000 square foot distribution center in Killingly, Connecticut. The state-of-the-art facility will be presented publicly for the first time today, as the company hosts up to 550 Staples employees and invited guests, including keynote speaker James Abromaitis, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development; Jack Burke, Chairman of Killingly Town Council; Tom Homan, Killingly Town Manager; Staples Chairman and CEO Thomas G. Stemberg, and other area officials.

The event at the distribution center begins at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 29th with morning refreshments, followed by speakers and a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m. The celebration will include a luncheon served to the media and invited guests at 11:45 a.m., with facility tours and media interviews conducted afterwards.

The new facility will be dedicated at that time to the Tracy family, longtime residents of Killingly. The 50-acre parcel where the Staples DC is located was first owned by Gilbert Tracy, purchased in 1865 after the end of the Civil War, and has been farmed by successive members of the Tracy family for more than one hundred years. Today, several members of the Tracy family are Staples' associates, including Doug Tracy, his fiancee, his brothers Tom and Tim and Tom's wife Liela.

Staples' Chairman and CEO Tom Stemberg remarked, "We are pleased to expand our distribution network in this region of Connecticut, where we have been well-served by our Putnam facility for many years. Siting our new center in Killingly has provided the central location and accessibility to major highways and rail lines that our rapid growth demands, but more importantly, the new facility allows us to retain our existing high quality work force."

Located on 50 acres of land on Tracy Road, just off Interstate 395, the ultra-modern $23 million distribution center will serve 150 New England stores. The Killingly distribution center is the second of three full-line facilities to be operated by Staples in a new distribution strategy. The company operates another similar facility in Hagerstown, Maryland to serve the mid-Atlantic states. A third distribution center recently broke ground in Rialto, California, and will soon serve stores in the western United States. The three new facilities are part of the company's strategy to centralize and upgrade its US distribution network to accommodate rapid store growth and continue cost-savings for customers through more efficient operating systems.

"We're delighted that Staples has decided to locate its eastern seaboard distribution center in Killingly. The new DC in Killingly and jobs preserved at Staples' facilities in Putnam and Plainfield provide benefits to the entire region, and demonstrate how government and the private sector can work together in securing jobs," commented Jack Burke, Chairman of Killingly Town Council.
